长期以来，华盛顿当局就将孔子学院定性为北京的文宣工具。美国国防部长赫格塞斯（Pete Hegseth）在上周五做出重要宣示：该部已正式认定孔子学院（Confucius Institutes）为美国国防安全的现实威胁——这些文化机构由中方资金驱动，广泛存在于美国高校校园。赫格塞斯同时指出，国防部已在过去8周内将「所有此类机构进行了组织性的彻底清除」。
赫格塞斯披露，在10月23日的声明中，他特别点名了这些由中国财政支持的文化实体。它们在各大学里采用了掩护身份进行操作，分布在全美30家高等院校，衍生出80个新增的思想宣传据点。尽管每个据点都冠以不同的名称和组织章程，实际上都指向同一个目标——掠夺知识产权资源，对美国学生的思想阵地进行浸透。
赫格塞斯强调指出，五角大楼已经把这些机构作为国防威胁对象纳入官方黑单。国防部在此前8周时间内，已有步骤地对所有此类组织实施了全面瓦解。值得关注的是，赫格塞斯做出了直截了当的宣言：「这个问题宣告结束，此后永远不会重来。」
路透通讯社的消息来源显示，中国在华盛顿的外交机构选择了缄默，对上述声明没有提出任何公开评论。
