这一工程自今年6月开始施工，上周末外部防护罩也已拆除。白宫方面表示，整项北门廊修缮预期于下周竣工。考虑到外交安排，川普计划在9月24日设宴款待习近平，白宫力求在国事访问到来之前，将门廊周边的工地环境整理妥当。
这座门廊已有近200年历史，系杰克逊时期的产物，因岁月侵蚀和自然风化，石质与灰泥建筑需进行系统更新。本次修缮范围涉及多个方面，既涵盖外观整修，也包含安全防护升级，以及宾夕法尼亚大道侧出入口的改造。
川普曾对媒体坦言，是他自己察觉到这处门廊日渐「老化」，遂作出全面整修的决策。该项目只是川普推动白宫及华盛顿多处联邦设施升级改造中的一环。值得一提的是，川普上周还公布了另一项成果：南草坪总统直升机坪已竣工。

与此相比，白宫规模最大的在建项目——新宴会厅及其配套地下设施——依然处于紧张施工状态。鉴于新宴会厅尚未落成，习近平访美期间的国宴将借用现有白宫场地以及周边施工区域进行。
新宴会厅工程陷入多重法律纠纷，其中核心问题在于政府是否可绕过国会同意而自行推进。8月31日，最高法院核准了行政部门提出的紧急请求，准许建设在诉讼悬而未决期间照常进行。不过，最高法院至今尚未就该项工程的合宪性问题作出最终判决。
