President Trump called Charlie Kirk the “greatest evangelist forAmerican liberty” during a memorial service for the slain politicalfigure, joining a parade of speakers who hailed Mr. Kirk as a“martyr” and vowed to carry on his mission to implement anexplicitly conservative Christian vision of the United States. Theservice mixed religious devotion with a raw battle cry intended togalvanize the political movement of the polarizing activist, whowas assassinated less than two weeks ago.
Mr. Trump capped an event that began with evangelical music andsomber remembrances of Mr. Kirk and steadily progressed into ahard-line political event. The whiplash was most clear in the finaltwo speakers: Minutes after Mr. Kirk’s widow, Erika, urged thecrowd to love their enemies as her husband did, Mr. Trump said hecould not agree. “I hate my opponent and I don’t want the best forthem,” he said, adding “Sorry Erika.”
A crowd of tens of thousands, at times cheering, at othersweeping, filled the stadium where the Arizona Cardinals play, inthe Phoenix suburb of Glendale, to hear remarks from speakers thatalso included Vice President JD Vance and members of Mr. Trump’scabinet.
Mr. Trump squarely blamed liberal politics for Mr. Kirk’s death,while members of his administration demonized their ideologicalopponents. Stephen Miller, a White House deputy chief of staff andclose adviser to Mr. Trump, delivered fiery remarks saying that Mr.Kirk’s political enemies “cannot imagine what they haveawakened.”

They were joined by thecommentator Tucker Carlson and scores of other elected officialsand notable conservatives. The crowd: Before dawn, huge crowds clogged roads as far as amile away, spilling into neighborhood streets and forcing policecars and ambulances to drive down the wrong sides of streets to getto their assigned locations. The assassination: Mr. Kirk, 31, was fatally shot on Sept. 10 ashe spoke to students at Utah Valley University. Prosecutors lastweek filed a murder charge against a 22-year-old man, TylerRobinson, who officials said had told his romantic partner that hehad “had enough” of Mr. Kirk’s “hatred.”
